Teaching

In the area of teaching, the initiative has focused on promoting and designing new programmes related to planetary wellbeing.

At the undergraduate level, UPF is committed to introducing the SDGs in existing curricula. To this end, in the 2020-2021 academic year, it carried out the pilot project ‘Working on the SDGs through the PBL and PjBL (problem-based and project-based learning) methodology’ in 15 undergraduate degree courses. It plans to extend this pilot project to 30 more university courses in the 2021-2022 academic year. At the postgraduate level, the existing offer has been expanded with the creation of a new interuniversity master’s degree programme in Public Health, the first of its kind with this focus. Finally, it is designing nine specialized courses (in minor or MOOC format) related to planetary wellbeing

Master’s degree programmes

Màster en Salut Planetària

Master’s degree in Planetary Health

The master’s degree in Planetary Health, jointly designed by UPF, the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and ISGlobal, is the first programme in the world with this focus. The programme, which will be launched online in October 2021, aims to provide interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary training to professionals from different fields of knowledge to enable them to analyse the risks that the global environmental and climate crisis poses for human health, assess the potential impact thereof, and propose adaptation and mitigation solutions.

Màster en Salut Pública

Master’s degree in Public Health

The main aim of the master’s degree programme in Public Health, jointly offered by UPF and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), is to train students to understand health/disease processes and their determinants from a populational perspective and to address health problems through collective interventions to promote, protect and restore health.

Màster Universitari en Estudis Migratoris

Master’s degree in Migration Studies

The master’s degree programme in Migration Studies aims to train researchers in the field of migration and diversity governance. The programme’s main focuses are political science, the Mediterranean, and qualitative research, and it offers two tracks: a research track and an expert track.

Màster Universitari en Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat

Master’s degree in International Studies on Media, Power and Difference

The programme analyses the role of the media in constructing, representing and recognizing the difference and the diversity of the most vulnerable groups, through a cross-cutting, critical look at the power structures behind communicative practices.

Postgrau en Gestió i Sostenibilitat Corporativa

Postgraduate Course in Sustainability Transition Management and Climate Emergency

This postgraduate course aims to equip you with the tools, knowledge and expertise to analyse companies’ environmental impact, design a result-oriented strategy, secure funding and develop a compelling communications plan backed by everyone involved.

Minor in Planetary Wellbeing

The minor is a supplementary form of training for UPF students, organized and carried out to enable acquisition of specific skills in a different field of knowledge from the one constituting the core of each student’s degree programme. These courses are worth between 12 and 30 credits and can be thematic, cross-disciplinary or for specific groups or programmes.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, the university worked to identify a set of significant undergraduate courses to include in the offer of a Minor in Planetary Wellbeing. The programme is scheduled to be launched in the 2021-2022 academic year.

MOOC

MOOCs (massive open online courses) aim to share and disseminate knowledge based on materials that teaching staff upload to the website and discussions about them.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, the university worked on the design of a MOOC entitled ‘Introduction to Planetary Wellbeing’, to be compulsory for all UPF undergraduate students and open to the general public.

The pilot programme will be launched in September 2021 and will have five parts:

  • Module 0: Introduction

  • Module 1: Sustainable Development Goals and the Planetary Wellbeing framework

  • Module 2: Climate change and sustainability

  • Module 3: Planetary health

  • Module 4: Planetary challenges for cities

Specific courses

UPF organises and hosts the 2022 Europaeum Winter School whose main goal is to increase knowledge and understanding of the set of complex, interrelated and systemic issues affecting the wellbeing of humans, animals and the planet itself.
