Sustainable Development Goals

UPF as an indispensable actor for achieving Sustainable Development Goals

The concept of Planetary Wellbeing as the highest attainable standard of wellbeing for human and non-human beings and their social and natural systems is to be applied across the UPF in the organisational terms (tackling climate change through their organisational actions through the topics of energy, water, healthy and sustainable infrastructure, mobility, waste, food and sustainable sourcing in general), and on the other hand in core university activities of research and teaching. By promoting a transversal multi- and transdisciplinary action in the field of planetary welfare, to provide the university with a vision committed to aiding the resolution of major societal challenges of the 21st century, that have arose as a side effect of improving societal wellbeing. As such, the Planetary Wellbeing initiative is aligned with the achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), aiming to provide the necessary framework to integrate the generation of knowledge and actions required to achieve each of the 17 SDGs. In particular, the Planetary Wellbeing initiative is closely aligned with the SDGs through three concentric circles of goals, under the overarching objective of SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals):

  1. A central core of wellbeing related goals: SDG1 (No Poverty); SDG3 (Good Health and Wellbeing); SDG4 (Quality Education); SDG5 (Gender Equality); SDG10 (Reduced Inequality); SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

  2. The goals related to infrastructures: SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation); SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth); SDG9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure); SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)..

  3. A layer embedding the previous two groups with the goals related to the natural environment: SDG13 (Climate Action); SDG14 (Life below Water); SDG15 (Life on Land).
