The Institute for Applied Linguistics (IULA) is a specific research centre at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) continuing the activities of the homonymous research institute founded in 1994. During these 25 years of history, the IULA has shown a distinguished training competence in several branches of Applied Linguistics through its own doctoral, masters and postgraduate programmes, as well as summer schools, and above all, for the numerous doctoral theses successfully defended.

Currently, the research and teaching staff of the IULA contribute to the higher education teaching through the Online Master Programme in Terminology, and masters and doctoral programmes of the Academic Coordination Unit of Translation and Language Sciences at the UPF. The research lines linked to the IULA are the following: lexicology, lexicography, terminology, neology, descriptive linguistics, linguistic variation, language technologies, computational linguistics, language engineering, corpus linguistics, specialised discourse analysis, change management and language diversity.

IULA members recurrently participate in the academic activities of the masters and doctoral programmes at other universities oriented to the research lines mentioned above.

Postdoctoral and doctoral research stays are alternative paths for studying and getting skilled in applied linguistics at IULA.
