The Secretary General, Dr. Gina Magnolia Riaño, of the Ibero-American Social Security Organization (OISS) presented yesterday the Ibero-American Observatory of Safety and Health at Work (ISST Observatory), together with the institutions promoting the project, the National Institute of Security and Occupational Health of Spain, represented by its Director, Mr. Carlos Arranz, the Office of Spain of the International Labor Organization, represented by the main advisor of its Research Department in Geneva, Mrs. Maria Luz Vega, and the Center for Research in Occupational Health (CiSAL) of the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, represented by Professor Fernando G. Benavides, scientific director of the ISST Observatory.

The OISS that presides over the Governing Council of the ISST Observatory will invite the other institutions that are part of the Organization to participate in it. This will create the necessary synergy so that the Observatory can generate useful information from existing data, through administrative records or national or international surveys. The studies and reports prepared by the ISST Observatory will be of great help in monitoring the OISS Health and Safety Strategy 2020-2023.

In its first report, of which a preview was presented yesterday, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the working-age population (between 16 and 69 years old) is confirmed, estimated in the eight countries that have participated so far in the study (Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Spain, Peru and Portugal) that for each deceased in this age group, 10 years of active working life are being lost, which will undoubtedly affect the sustainability of the social protection systems. The differences observed between countries must be analyzed in relation to social and health spending, as well as the vulnerability represented by the high rates of informal employment. The Scientific Committee that will be created in the coming months will contribute to continue with these studies and others that will be started according to the work plan of the ISST Observatory for 2021.
