Predoctoral researchers that have a Spanish university instructor training fellowship (FPU in its Spanish acronym) have to demonstrate that they have acquired teaching skills in higher education through a training programme and through their participation in a teaching internship. The Teaching Training Programme (TTP) of the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) has been created to provide this training and certify it through the MELIS PhD Programme in Biomedicine in front of the Spanish Ministry of Universities, which is the official body that awards the FPU fellowships.

The main mission of the TTP is to train predoctoral researchers in the transfer of knowledge through the training in higher education, under the supervision of an academic tutor. The participation of predoctoral researchers in teaching duties will be recognised with a certificate issued by the UPF with the qualification of “academic collaborator”.

Objectives

Provide a basic level of the teaching skills required in higher education, including a presentation of the different teaching and evaluation methodologies proposed by the Common Educational Framework of EDvolució at the UPF.

Create teaching callings tied to the transfer of knowledge generated in the scope of research.

Raise awareness among predoctoral researchers about the importance of delivering high-quality and solid training.

Academic tutor

The academic tutor will be the subject, or subjects, coordinator, in which the predoctoral researcher will develop his, or her, training. The academic tutor will guide the predoctoral researcher in the preparation and execution of his teaching duties.

Mutual expectations and responsibilities have to be agreed prior to the beginning of the programme. More concretely, the academic tutor has to ensure that the predoctoral researcher is qualified to instruct the training contents, and that he, or she, understands and accepts the class schedule and is committed to follow it. The participation of predoctoral researchers in teaching duties will not have any impact on the capacity of academic tutors to take on their teaching assignments; that is, the TTP will not lead to any change in the assignment of resources to these tutors.

The thesis supervisors of the predoctoral researchers signed up for the TTP, who have a contractual entitlement to the UPF, will act as academic tutors of these same predoctoral researchers, providing the teaching internship in subjects taught at their department. Thesis supervisors who have no contractual entitlement to the UPF will attempt to find an academic tutor within the UPF and, if this is not possible, will request help to find one to the TTP coordinating committee through an email sent to [email protected].

Application

Predoctoral researchers with an FPU fellowship have to sign up for the TTP through this form.

Academic Programme

The academic programme of the TTP consists of carrying out:

Training in basic teaching concepts and methodologies through the initial training in university teaching programme (FIDU in its Catalan acronym), taught by the Center for Learning Innovation and Knowledge (CLIK) of the UPF.

Teaching internship in the subject, o subjects, designated by the academic tutor.

Office hours with the students to whom teaching has been delivered to resolve questions.

Other activities specified by the tutor: participation in conferences, preparation of teaching materials, supervision and correction of exams and homeworks, etc.
