Rethinking revolution, nonhuman animals, antispeciesism and power

These are the main topics of the 6th Conference of the European Association for Critical Animal Studies (EACAS), organized by the Centre for Animal Ethics and the Critical Communication Research Group of the Department of Communication together with the EACAS, to be held from 22 to 24 May on the Poblenou campus.

Organized by the Centre for Animal Ethics (CAE), the Critical Communication Research Group (Criticc) of the Department of Communication at UPF, and the European Association for Critical Animal Studies (EACAS), from 22 to 24 May the 6th EACAS Conference will be held on UPF’s Poblenou campus. The event is supported by UPF’s Department of Communication and Department of Law, as well as by Lush, Ariwa, Rita Wind, ESLA, Traslosmuros, Estació Vegana, La Raposa and Apunts.

The main theme for this year’s event is: “Rethinking revolution: nonhuman animals, antispeciesism, and power”. It has attracted scholars from various fields and disciplines as well as activists concerned by the main topics of the Conference: power, total liberation and antispeciesism. The aim is to encourage participants to rethink the revolution represented by the theory of animal liberation, a theory and a social movement that fights against animal oppression that came into existence in the 1970s.

200 people have registered and 115 communications have been accepted for presentation”, explains Núria Almiron, a member of the organizing committee and co-director of the CAE. The programme also includes a couple of roundtables and practical workshops, and important international guest speakers will be participating.

Keynote speakers

Elisa Aaltola, a researcher in philosophy at the University of Turku (Finland), who will be giving the opening speech “Emotions as Political and Moral Concepts: The Need for (Radically) New “Animal Emotions”, on 22 May at 10 am in the auditorium of the Poblenou campus. Her research focuses on animal ethics, animal philosophy and moral psychology, and she has written eight books on the subject

Claire Parkinson, a professor of film, television and digital media and co-director of the Centre for Human Animal Studies (CfHAS), will be presenting the paper “Rethinking a relationship between anthropomorphism and animal liberation”, on 23 May at 10 am in the auditorium of the Poblenou campus. Her research interests focus on the media, film and animal studies, among others.

Geertrui Cazaux, who studied Criminology and Environmental Sciences (1995), is to give the keynote talk on 24 May at 10 am in the auditorium of the Poblenou campus, with the paper “Crip HumAnimal. On ableism, speciesism and inclusiveness in the vegan movement”. Her research topic explores the sociology of human-animal relations.

Aph Ko, with the presentation “Beyond Anti-Speciesism: AfroZoological Resistance” will draw the conference to a close on 24 May at 5.15 pm in the auditorium of the Poblenou campus. She is co-author of Aphro-ism: Essays on Pop Culture, Feminism, and Black Veganism which explores new theoretical frameworks for race, feminism, and the defence of non-human animals.

The organizing committee of the 6th EACAS Conference consists of CAE members Núria AlmironCatia FariaLaura Fernández and Eze Paez, with Daniela R. Waldhorn (UB), with the help of Maria R. Carreras (graphic design) and Sandra Amigó (web manager).
