Learn flamenco cante (singing) thanks to the support of technology. A free, open course
This is the proposal of a new online course whose first edition starts today, 23 October, on the MiríadaX platform, with Emilia Gómez, researcher of the Music Technology research group, and Alba Guerrero, professor of flamenco cante at the “Rafael Orozco” Conservatory of Music in Cordoba, as members of the academic team.
The Music Technology research group (MTG) of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF, in collaboration with the ESMUC and the online platform MiríadaX, is offering from today, 23 October, the first course of the first edition of the Cante Flamenco Tech programme, an online course dedicated to the teaching of flamenco singing from a technological perspective.

Lasting four weeks, Cante Flamenco Tech is divided into an introductory module followed by the study of the main vocal resources of flamenco: mordente, ataque soplado, bebeo, jipío. Finally, these resources are put into practice in a Fandango de Huelva.
The course integrates the current technologies for sound and music analysis which provides an interdisciplinary approach integrating the fields of acoustics, sound processing and singing.

In addition, the course includes a virtual platform developed by Voctrolabs, a technology company that emerged from research by the MTG, on which the students will be able to test and visualize the parameters studied on the course from the singer’s own voice. The course is in Spanish with the possibility of activating English subtitles.
An expert, interdisciplinary academic team
Emilia Gómez, Telecommunications Engineer from the University of Seville and PhD in Computer Science from Pompeu Fabra University. A professor (Serra-Húnter and ICREA Academia) of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at UPF, she leads the Music Information Research Lab within the Music Technology group. She is also a researcher at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. In the field of research, she develops technology for listening to and the practice of music and studies the impact of artificial intelligence on people.
Alba Guerrero Manzano, a graduate in Flamenco Cante (ESMUC), a master’s degree in Research and Flamenco and a Specialist Technician in Programme Realization, has developed her teaching career for more than fifteen years at the Escola Superior d’Estudis Musicals-Taller de Músics (musicians’ workshop) of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) and is currently a professor in the specialist field of Flamenco Cante at the “Rafael Orozco” Conservatory of Music in Cordoba.
Cante Flamenco Tech is a free, open course. So far, two hundred people have registered and the registration period is still open.
