1st Spanish ESS Congress “Spanish Society in Comparative Perspective: 15 years of ESS in Spain”

The Spanish National Committee of the European Social Survey (ESS) has successfully organized the 1st Spanish ESS Congress on “Spanish Society in Comparative Perspective: 15 years of ESS in Spain” on 20 – 21st September 2018. The Congress has been hosted by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and funded by the ESS-SUSTAIN project (Horizon 2020, Grant Agreement 676166).

This Congress has brought together ESS data users from Spain and abroad working across a range of disciplines to share ideas, discuss results and showcase the type of research that can be carried out through the ESS.

The Congress officially started with an inaugural plenary to welcome participants introducing the ESS with a brief overview of the results of the 8th round in Spain in comparative perspective (both from the cross-national and longitudinal standpoints), followed by the award ceremony of the Best ESS Junior Paper Award. There were also a number of Student Accommodation Grants for PhD, Master or Bachelor students covering the costs associated with attending the conference.

Before the plenary session, participants could attend a workshop in which the main available online tools to access ESS information were presented: the R package 'essurvey' and the application to download the ESS data with Spanish variable labels and names. During the congress, 32 presentations were given in the eight panels. For more detailed information on the congress’ programme, please look here.
