Matsue, Japan – 2023 December

In December 2023, researchers from Pompeu Fabra University presented two papers related to RemixED project work at the 31st International Conference on Computers in Education that took place in Matsue, Japan. The conference, organized by the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education (APSCE), was attended by leading researchers in learning technologies from around the world. ICCE is a ranked conference in the International CORE Conference Rankings.

The first paper was a poster presented as part of the SATELUC program and is titled, Supporting Engineering Degree Student Wellbeing with Compulsory Lessons on Stress Management. The paper can be downloaded from here. It was also published in the Conference Proceedings Vol.2. Here is the paper’s abstract:

In this paper, we present findings from the evaluation of compulsory lessons on stress management at an engineering school in Spain. Both a face-to-face and an online lesson were integrated into a credit-bearing course for first-year university students. A pre-post survey study was conducted (n= 54). Results indicate that the lessons fostered more positive stress mindsets among students. Findings also suggest that students increased their proficiency in contemplating the topic of academic stress and in understanding the active role they can play in managing stress.

The second short paper is titled, Using Learning Design Technologies for Teachers’ Practice-Driven Research. The paper can be downloaded from here. It was also published in the Conference Proceedings Vol.1. Here is the paper’s abstract:

This paper presents two case studies related to developing educational technologies paired with teacher professional development (PD) courses to support practice-driven research among teachers. The case studies emerged from multidisciplinary projects involving schoolteachers and researchers. The first project supports teacher use of evidence-based teaching strategies that align with the science of learning such as retrieval practice and distributed practice. The second project supports teachers in helping students learn to manage stress using evidence-based self-regulation techniques such as mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal. The projects fuse together concepts of teacher inquiry, learning design, online communities of teachers, and open educational resources to support teacher practice-driven research. An overview of teacher-generated research and impressions of the PD courses gathered during piloting are presented along with descriptions of the two supporting technologies. Implications for practice are also shared.

RemixED is a 30-month project from the 2021 Erasmus+ call for the promotion of projects in education, training, youth, and sports. The project is coordinated by TIDE, a research group on Interactive and Distributed Technologies for Education from the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Pompeu Fabra University. Together with the schools Centro de Estudios Dolmen S.L. of Barcelona, SEK International School Atlántico, Lykeio Archangelou Apostolos Markos (Nicosia, Cyprus), and Klasseskolen (Hillerød, Denmark); universities (University of Vigo, European University of Cyprus), and an educational consultancy (MLCommunicate from Copenhagen, Denmark), RemixED produces and pilots a teacher professional development programme and supporting tools that are centered on supporting student wellbeing through the adaptation of open educational resources on the science of stress and the application of Universal Design for Learning.
