PhD. Associate Professor

I am an Associate Professor at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain). I am an environmental social scientist (PhD Environmental Sciences, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2008) trained in interdisciplinary social science (MAS History & Economic Institutions, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2007) and ecological economics (MSc Ecological Economics, University of Edinburgh, 2000).

I work in the interdisciplinary fields of political ecology, ecological economics and degrowth.

My research in political ecology looks at social and political challenges to accelerating just low carbon transitions and climate-adapted futures by studying social conflict and the politics of implementing climate change mitigation (e.g. wind energy) and adaptation (e.g. sea-level rise, urban greening) policy responses, particularly those related to Green Deals.

My ecological economics work examines the potential and limitations of improving environmental governance through the inclusion of plural and diverse values in environmental decision-making by means of democratic deliberation.

My work on degrowth explores links between direct democracy and degrowth transitions.

Finally, I use mixed methods, and in particular Q methodology, to look into attitudes and narratives about socio-ecological transformations (such as just transitions, food sovereignty, climate change adaptation, degrowth) and means to pursue them (such as green taxation, non-meat-eating diets, the Green New Deal).

Prior to my current post, I was Ramón y Cajal Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2017-22). Before that, I worked for the Institute of Environmental Science & Technology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) as: Scientific Coordinator (2010-12) of the EU-funded FP7 research project Climate Change, Hydro-Conflict and Human Security (CLICO); as Senior Researcher (2014-16), managing the FP7 European Network of Political Ecology (ENTITLE) Marie Curie ITN; and, as Postdoctoral Researcher (2013-14) in the FP7 Environmental Justice Organisations, Liabilities and Trade (EJOLT) Science-in-Society project. Between 2001-05, I worked as a Researcher in Ecological Economics at the Scottish Agricultural College in Edinburgh (UK). I have conducted fieldwork in rural Ecuador, rural Scotland, and rural Spain.
