Resum: The art institution has long been theorized as a potential space for public debates and discussions (Vergo, 1989; Hooper-Greenhill, 1992; Bennet, 1995). Moreover, since late-1990s, there has been a growing interest around the idea of bringing cultural institutions into play as active part of social struggles (Ribalta, 2010). In fact, different curators and art practitioners have used discursive public programmes* as mediums to create alternative forms of democratic participation in these institutions (Möntmann, 2010; De Baere, Borja-Villel and Esche, 2016). However, if we consider both the language and the set-up in used during these programmes, we understand that not everybody can participate in these institutions. In fact, for many these have been described as ‘inaccessible’, ‘not for everybody’, ‘discouraging’, ‘exclusive’, or ‘a performance’ (notes from interviews). Drawing from Joan Tronto’s statement that ‘by noticing boundaries, we notice what they include and exclude’ (Tronto, 1993:X). This presentation focuses on the language in used during the discursive public events at contemporary art institutions, to understand what it includes and excludes.

*Discursive public programmes: Events which have language as the main form of expression, such as talks conferences or symposiums.
