UPF Legal Clinic Participates Before International Human Rights Bodies
The Legal Clinic of Pompeu Fabra University, as a space for the theoretical and practical learning of law, has once again participated before United Nations human rights mechanisms and bodies. It has contributed to the drafting of reports, recommendations, and legal criteria to be issued by these international organizations. Among the most notable contributions are:
-
Contribution to the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances for the drafting of a General Comment on women, girls, and enforced disappearances.
-
Contribution to the Committee on the Rights of the Child for the drafting of General Comment No. 27 on children’s right to access to justice and an effective remedy.
-
Contribution to the Special Rapporteur on cultural rights for an upcoming report on human rights based on artificial intelligence and creativity.
-
Contribution to the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers for her next thematic report on artificial intelligence and judicial systems.
-
Contribution to the Working Group on Business and Human Rights for its report on “Labor Migration, Business and Human Rights.”
Under the coordination of Professor Karlos Castilla, students from the University Master's Degree in Advanced Legal Sciences and the Master in European and Global Law (Julia Daszkiewicz, Yhasira Fabián, Nathalia Hurtado, Diego Illanes, Daniela Montero, and Laura Ramón) were able to put into practice the knowledge acquired in the International Human Rights Law course and contribute their expertise to the development of international human rights standards.
Furthermore, starting this academic year, the Legal Clinic has opened its doors to undergraduate Law students to join this initiative of participation in international human rights protection spaces. Also under the direction of Professor Karlos Castilla, and led by student Ian Barrera Sosa as coordinator of the Clinic and the Working Group, students Claudia Hernández, Emma Soley, Marina Campos, Carlota de Solà, Ingrid de Solà, and Aina Danés submitted the following contributions:
-
Contribution to the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing for the report on the “Situation of Adequate Housing in Guatemala”.
-
Contribution to the Special Rapporteur on Toxic Substances and Human Rights for the thematic report to the General Assembly on “Toxic Substances and Human Rights", with special support from lawyer José Manuel Aznar Puyalto, a UPF Law Faculty alumnus.
-
Contribution to the Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment for her thematic report to the General Assembly.
Through these actions, the UPF Legal Clinic contributes not only to the superior training of UPF students but also to providing solutions and proposals for some of the current legal debates and challenges at both national and international levels.
