CAS researchers publish a children's book on digital well-being and social media

Dr Mònika Jiménez Morales (UPF) and Dr Mireia Montaña Blasco (UOC), researchers from the Communication, Advertising & Society (CAS) group and principal investigators of the SMARS project (Mental Health, Adolescents and Social Networks), have published Una finestra a la butxaca (Una ventana en el bolsillo in Spanish), a children's illustrated book released by Editorial Mediterrània with illustrations by Roser Matas Nadal.
The book, available for readers aged 5 and up, tells the story of Kas, a curious and observant dog whose owners, two children named Max and Carla, cannot put their phones down. Through a weekend trip to the mountains, the family rediscovers what it means to be present and connected to one another. The story serves as a vehicle to help young readers and their families reflect on how algorithms shape their perception of reality, the risks this entails, and the importance of conscious digital consumption.
Beyond the narrative, the book offers a set of practical tools for families, available as downloadable materials via QR code. These include a "Trust and Superpowers Contract" for children to sign before receiving their first mobile phone, a weekly "Training Review" guide for discussing digital safety and emotional well-being at home, and a set of guidelines for parents on empathetic accompaniment in the digital environment.
The publication is the result of three years of research conducted within the SMARS project (2023-2026), which examines the role of digital platforms in shaping public discourse on mental health among adolescents. Una finestra a la butxaca is available simultaneously in Catalan and Spanish at bookshops across Spain as of 25 February 2026.
