We are very happy to announce that Jose Miguel Tomasena and Carlos A. Scolari will be part of a panel in the ICA 2021, titled Creators, Communities and Connectedness: A roundtable on global dimensions of social media entertainment and wanghong.

Carlos A. Scolari is going to present “TikTok and the War of the Platforms. Analyzing media emergence and competition from an interface-centred approach, and José Miguel Tomasena, “Semio-Discursive Analysis and Spanish-speaking BookTubers”.

Also, there will be other academics such as Stuart Cunningham, David Craig, Hector Postigo, Brent Luvaas, Junyi Lv, Elaine Jing Zhao, Jian Lin, Sangeet Kumar, Sriram Mohan, Aswin Punathambekar, and Arturo Arriagada.

The Roundtable is devoted to examining global dimensions of social media entertainment (SME). SME is our term (Cunningham & Craig, Social media entertainment: The new intersection of Hollywood and silicon valley) for the emerging industry based on the work of creators alternatively called influencers, Instagrammers, YouTubers, livestreamers, game players, as well as KOLs, zhubo, and Wang Hong in China. These producers are cultural entrepreneurs securing some form of remuneration on the major social media platforms. Most creators have started out as amateur enthusiasts who, through the platform affordances, have aspired to build sustainable, and sometimes have achieved stellar, careers. The industry comprises the platforms, creators, intermediaries, and fan communities operating interdependently, and disruptively, alongside legacy media industries and across global media cultures.

The session will take place during 27th to 31th of May in the 71st Annual ICA Conference theme of Engaging the Essential Work of Care: Communication, Connectedness, and Social Justice.
