22.02.2018

The USQUID of the centre carried out in 2014 a study on the satisfaction of Bachelors’ Degrees students with the system of external practices. The population of this study was made up of all the students of the ESUP Bachelor's Degrees who had practiced (a total of 123), but the sample was reduced to 86, since the rest were informant agents in another project of the USQUID*. Of these 86 consulted, a response of 60 was obtained, therefore, the participation with respect to the sample selected is 69.8% and 48.8% of the total of students of ICT Degrees who carried out external practices.

  • Regarding the personal dimension:
    • The participation in the study regarding the distribution of ICT Degree studies was unequal according to the degree, namely: GEI (45%). GET (35%), GESA (17%) and Simultaneous studies (3%).
    • The gender distribution responds to 92% of men and 8% of women.
    • The average age of participants in the study in of 23 years.

  • Regarding the academic-competential dimension:
    • As motivations that the students participating in the study consider more decisive at the same time to carry out extracurricular practices, we find "Acquiring new knowledge", "Knowing the future profession" and "Increasing the possibilities of work insertion". As for other motivations proposed by the students themselves, there is "Economic remuneration" and "Acquisition of work experience".
    • As criteria for the selection of the center of internships, students emphasize on Motivation for the tasks that they will develop, the Interest for the sector or business area and Motivation for pre-established competencies. As other criteria proposed by students, the Acquisition of professional contacts and Knowledge of a company arise. 58% of the participants had previous knowledge of the competences that they were going to develop during the practical stay.
    • 93% of the students with the finalization of the stay of practices are able to recognize acquired competences.

  • Regarding the professional and impact dimension:
    • Regarding the supervision of tasks by a tutor in the internship centre, students say, by 98%, having had tutoring. Otherwise, in regard to this same function but from the university, 62% of the participating sample claims to have followed these tasks.
    • Regarding the satisfaction of the tutoring by the company, it is observed that 97% of students claim to be satisfied. Regarding tutoring by the university, the percentage that claims to have been satisfied is 22%. Thus, it is obtained that often the student is more satisfied with the tutoring received in the company.
    • As aspects positively valued in the practice system, the participating students consider Acquisition of work experience, Learning, Economic remuneration, Speed and simplicity of management or Variety of options and centers on the job market. As improvable aspects of the practice system, students emphasize the lack of monitoring and tutoring by the University, the cost of the validation of credits and lack of information regarding aspects of the practices as a whole.

From these conclusions from the centre and in conjunction with the coordination of practices, it initiated an internal work to improve the system and internal management with results positively evaluated.
