Symposium about Teaching Innovation at ESUP

Last March 14th (2014), throughout the morning, the USUID-ESUP shared with several professors from the Faculty and members of CQUID the Symposium about Teaching Innovation at ESUP. The main objective of this symposium was to provide a comfortable space in which different professors from the Faculty could share teaching experiences with the attendees.

The session was headed by USQUID-ESUP director, Davinia Hernández-Leo, who, along withVerónica Moreno (USQUID educator) presented some results from recent studies and they also stimulated the session based on Little interventions, in which the participants explained their teaching experiences they had carried out and afterward there was a discussion/joint consideration with the rest of attendees. You can find a brief summary below:

The first teaching experience was presented by Professor Víctor Dalmau. Specifically, Víctor explained his experience about the application of the Moore Method in the course Formal Systems from 3rd year of the Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences. For those who do not know about it, the main idea of the Moore method is based on the fact that one learns only when one does it by himself/herself, thus, the center of attention in the learning process becomes the work developed by the student himself/herself. The need to remake the support materials of the course was said to be a requirement for the correct application of this method, putting stress on the revision of the theoretical conceptualization as well as the approach of the exercises. The class dynamics were based, mainly, on having a student by the blackboard solving a problem with the help and orientations of the rest of classmates. The professor emphasizes that this method strengthens, promotes and stimulates a rigorous and reasoned learning.

The approach about the use of academic videos was headed by the USQUID-ESUP and ProfessorBoris Bellalta which, in the scope of first year courses (Introduction to TIC and Networks and Services, respectively), were used as support complements in the acquisition of basic concept-learning process of the courses.

It was Professor Joan Codina who proposed the subject about multilingualism in class since it is a subject that creates concerns to professors and students. Some common considerations came out among the attendees about the predisposition and implication of the students to participate about this initiative in the different courses as well as possible actions to promote it and strengthen the utility perception and the impact on the students training at ESUP.

Professor Rafael Ramírez shared with the attendees his experience titled: Robotic platform: robot use for learning integration by which he pursues promoting and achieving a more integrated learning and incrementing, as well, student encouragement.

On her side, Professor Emilia Gómez, commented two actions she carries out in the scope of the courses in which she takes part; on one hand, the Sound Creation Lab and, on the other, the Termcat Glossary. The Sound Creation Lab is based on the creation of a Project presented to the audience and that encourages team work. Specifically, what is expected is that the students be able to apply concepts and processes practiced in the course theory and practice in a concert. This concert is entirely organized by students, which promotes as well other cross character competences.

The elaboration of the Termcat Glossary seems a means to reply to the need of commanding technical language belonging to the professional profile of, especially, an Audiovisual Systems Engineer in different languages. It was also used as a strategy for the introduction of English in class. Specifically, 287 terms usually used in the audiovisual field were defined.

Professor Oscar Camara presented during the Symposium about Innovation at ESUP a practice that he develops in the scope of the course "Introduction to University and to Biomedical Engineering" objective of which is making the students familiar with the Department research promoting the knowledge about and interest in research groups from DTIC in general and researchers from DTIC in particular.

Automatic summary tools for the easy access to textual information. Professor Horacio Saggionshares with us the use of intelligent applications online to integrate the natural language processing. The objective is to show students the process of how to get an automatic summary of any website. It is a really practical source in which specific tools are shown.

Finally, the Hackathons organization. It was Professor Albert Domingo who spoke about these meetings which also include chats about several subjects like the development of online applications or support measures that UPF offers to enterprising initiatives.
