The human heritage of the university community is one of the most precious assets for promoting culture. Its involvement materializes in mechanics that are especially related to the creative generation of cultural activities and products, which become a static or dynamic contribution to the Culture programme as a whole. The UPF project recognizes a wide variety of initiatives regarding this point, with the aim of covering different facets of the creative cultural and artistic spectrum; but also with the aim of nurturing various skills of the UPF community in the field of culture.


 

+RAIN Film Fest

+RAIN Film Fest is the first European festival of films generated using artificial intelligence (AI). +RAIN explores contemporary film narrative with AI-based technologies and their aesthetic, ethical and political possibilities and implications. The event opens itself to surprise, experimentation and in-depth debate on the place of authorship in a transformative technology that generates a new dimension in creative procedures.

Artist in residence

The Department of Medicine and Life Sciences of the UPF (MELIS-UPF), in collaboration with the Vila Casas Foundation, announces an artistic research grant for creators interested in the field of biomedical sciences.

The Artist in Residence initiative is the result of an agreement signed in 2020 between the UPF and the Vila Casas Foundation to promote contemporary art and artistic creation at the University. It is part of the UPF Culture Programme, through which the University wants to contribute to social change also through culture.

Literary Collection

Under the leadership of the UPF-Barcelona School of Management, UPF has launched a literary collection that has been the main thread of various cultural activities and has helped, from the humanities standpoint, to explain certain concepts in the curricula of a broad diversity of subjects. The collection constitutes a catalogue that enables exploring universal and transdisciplinary issues through literature. The first four works are Bartleby, the Scrivener, by Melville; Candide, by Voltaire, and Machiavelli’s The Prince, Shakespeare's The Tempest.

The Campus Universitario Mar announces the contest "Decorate the Campus" with the aim of selecting an artistic proposal to decorate a space in the an artistic proposal to decorate a space in the faculty building. The work must be focused on the field of health and life sciences.

Diari de Barcelona

Since the 2019-2020 academic year, Pompeu Fabra University has been entrusted with the bicentennial publication Diari de Barcelona. Through the “daily”, students on varying degrees, led by students of the Department of Communication, will carry out daily journalistic tasks to gather local current affairs in various media formats, avoiding solely focusing on university matters.

El Maria Canals porta cua!

The Maria Canals International Piano Contest, founded in 1954, targets young performers from all over the world between 18 and 30 years of age. One of the activities related to the contest is called "El Maria Canals porta cua", which consists of installing grand pianos in many different public locations for whoever feels like playing them.

For the last 8 years, UPF has installed these pianos on its campuses, thus contributing to breaking down the social, cultural and mental barriers most people have with regard to music.

In Residency

An incubation and acceleration programme for alumni that are carrying out social impact projects and projects involving the university community. To date, “In residency” has included six initiatives each year, which must prove a solid connection with UPF but also a notable capacity for transformation and external impact.

Hacklab

Awarded a Vicens Vives prize, the HackLab is an unofficial training lab for UPF undergraduate students. It aims to develop projects that are not necessarily related to the subjects of a study programme in order to transcend the purely academic framework.

Starting Lab

The Starting Lab is an incubator of interactive communication products, driven by UPF and coordinated by the Canòdrom - Creative Research Park, with the support of the Catalan Government’s Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies.

Premis de Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi Awards

On 23 April 1992, the Sant Jordi Awards were first delivered at UPF, which initially involved three categories: poetry, fiction and posters.

Ever since, there has been a growing interest in participating and the number of categories has increased, allowing participants to develop their practical skills and abilities in the art of writing, design, photography and audiovisuals.

Virtual bookshelf 

The virtual bookshelf is intended to become a showcase from which to recognize and disseminate literary talent “made in UPF”. Established in the 2019-2020 academic year, the virtual bookshelf is updated annually, coinciding with world book day, collecting the literary works written or translated by alumni of the University during the current year.

RIS3CAT Mèdia

RIS3CAT Mèdia

RIS3CAT is an announcement of ERDF grants currently managed by ACCIÓ aiming at creating knowledge communities. UPF belongs to the Media community, oriented towards the cultural industries, leading three of its eight projects and participating in a fourth. All of them involve public and private entities with a desire to intervene in processes of cultural sector innovation, development and transfer. The projects in which it plays a decisive role are:

  • Engagement (led by UPF): a project to transform the relationship between museums and their audiences using technology during visits to them.
  • EDvidence (led by UPF): an unprecedented incubation initiative for companies involved in educational and cultural change.
  • NanoMOOC (led by UPF): the production of various online programmes targeting certain strategic sectors: nutrition, small businesses, tourism, and media education, among others.
  • Mironins (involving UPF): an interactive production on the work of Joan Miró, tightening relations between the Miró Foundation and Pompeu Fabra University.

Tallers de Teatre

Theatre Workshop activities 

Each academic year, the Theatre Workshop performs on the premises of the University and at various other university theatre circuits. Its repertoire includes works by Sophocles, Shakespeare, Ibsen and Beckett, among others.

Due to the quality of the Theatre Workshop’s productions, the University decided to record the works of the last ten years to make them available to everyone via the UPF YouTube channel.
