I sat awhile in perfect silence, rallying my stunned faculties. Immediately it occurred to me that my ears had deceived me, or Bartleby had entirely misunderstood my meaning. I repeated my request in the clearest tone I could assume; but in quite as clear a one came the previous reply, “I would prefer not to.” (p. 36)

Bartleby arrives at the office and so does the end of the world. With the unique, enigmatic and mythic phrase "I'd rather not," Bartleby the writer neither nods nor denies, and thus wields absolute power through speech. Its formula to sow panic, prevents a relationship between will and power from being built.

Bewildered, lost in perplexity and hopelessness, the narrator uses all kinds of measures to get out of the impasse in which Bartleby's formula has put him. And so until a limit situation. His imagination seems unable to overcome the crisis.

 

Bankleby era un empleado bancario ejemplar. Había llegado a la oficina hacía años y siempre había sido un trabajador eficiente y profesional. Esto le había granjeado la antipatía de su anterior jefe y de algunos de sus compañeros. Por eso nunca ascendió. Pero a Bankleby le daba igual. Siempre fue un espíritu independiente y con compromisos propios que no solía compartir. Hablaba poco, y esto tampoco le ayudaba en un ambiente de constante exaltación y celebraciones por la consecución de los logros comerciales. El nuevo director era un graduado de la mejor universidad de la ciudad. Llevaba poco tiempo en el sector pero tenía buenas credenciales. Los días transcurrían entre la cotidianidad de la alegría contenida y las comprobaciones del Excel. ¿Cuán cerca estamos de cumplir el objetivo? Esta era la pregunta estelar hora tras hora. Día tras día. En fin, todo normal. Hipoteca, hipoteca, hipoteca, hipoteca.

Bartleby ni afirma ni nega, no diu ni sí ni diu no. Senzillament prefereix no haver ni d’acceptar ni de rebutjar. És cert que sempre prefereix no fer, i mai ofereix una alternativa positiva. Però sempre evita la negació. Es situa en una suspensió tenaçment inactiva entre el sí i el no, entre l’acceptació i el rebuig. Fa esclatar (…) totes les regles gramaticals del tracte humà. Suspèn educadament però obstinadament la disposició “proactiva”, com diriem avui, i possiblement l’empatia (…). En aquest sentit Bartleby és monstruosament inhumà.
