The concept of responsible research and innovation (RRI) is an open and changing concept. In its current definition, one of the most important points is the need to involve society. RRI proposes to respond to the needs of society, to anticipate society's needs and therefore establishes a link with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The European Commission establishes these five main aspects: 

• Science and open access
• Scientific education
• Ethics
• Participation
• Promotion of gender equality
