University glossary

What is it? What's in it?

Published in 2008, the Catalan ↔ Spanish ↔ English university glossary is a working tool produced and maintained by the Language Office with the dual purpose of facilitating the work of translation into English and Spanish of generic terms and designations in the field of academy and the university and unifying criteria both within the university community and with external translators who cooperate with UPF in the translation of administrative and institutional documents.

The Catalan ↔ Spanish ↔ English university glossary includes over one thousand generic terms in the fields of academy and the university (such as llicenciaturagraudocència regladaensenyament semipresencialaprenentatge basat en problemes or assignatura de lliure elecció, among many others), with their corresponding translation into English and Spanish. Enquiries can be made in Catalan, English and Spanish, either according to alphabetical blocks or by means of the advanced search engine in the Glossary, by entering the word or phrase or any of the words it contains.

The most appropriate translations are proposed and are therefore the ones to be used primarily in the University's administrative and institutional fields.

On the other hand, since mid 2009 almost all solutions proposed and included in the basic glossary (of about two hundred and fifty terms) agreed and produced by the Interuniversity Group of Nomenclature in English (GINA) have been adopted, thus assuring a certain consensus in this field with the whole of the university system in Catalonia.
