Back Pep Vidal, the artist bringing the universe of Edward Hopper to the MELIS

Pep Vidal, the artist bringing the universe of Edward Hopper to the MELIS

For Pep Vidal, there is no division between science and art. He is an artist and a scientist. He holds a degree in mathematics, a doctorate in physical sciences, teaches the subject of optics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and has advanced studies in contemporary art from A-Desk.

Pep Vidal has won the second edition of the artistic residency awarded by the UPF Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) and the Antoni Vila Casas Private Foundation. During the residency, Vidal is meeting with staff from different research groups to develop his artistic project.

Inspired by the theme “Biomedical research in a landscape by Edward Hopper”, Vidal asks different researchers, from their respective discipline, to interpret the work by the American painter entitled ‘Roads and trees’. Through a sheet of vegetable paper that reveals Hopper’s work, Vidal seeks to add a layer of science to the painting, shaping the knowledge and reflections of the different researchers who will comment on the work. An intersection between science and art that allows Vidal to create a new narrative and establish new dialogues.

With his residency, the artist aims to highlight the importance of transcending disciplinary barriers and fostering collaboration and dialogue between scientists and artists. Along this journey, enriching perspectives will emerge that reflect the growing relevance of exploring new horizons of knowledge through the intersection of science and art.

This year, Vidal has also curated the exhibition of the Tàpies Foundation, A=A, B=B, inspired by the book “The new vision of the world” written by several authors in 1954, which represents a significant publication for the Catalan artist. The exhibition features artists and researchers from different disciplines, and the collaboration of Pompeu Fabra University and other research centres, which brings the dialogue on the scientific method and the intersection between people, art and science to the present day.
