Fernando García Benavides has a degree in Medicine from the University of Seville and a Doctorate from the University of Alicante (extraordinary award). Since 2007 he has been a professor in the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) ​​at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and since 2010 Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health.

His research aims to contribute to improving the health of workers, through etiological and evaluation studies in occupational health, and the production of reports that help inform priorities in occupational health policies. Since its foundation in 2009 and until 2015, he has directed the Occupational Health Research Center (CiSAL) of University Pompeu Fabra, where he continues as a senior researcher.

In 2020 he was appointed Scientific Director of the Ibero-American Observatory of Safety and Health at Work by the OISS.

Since 2015, he has been director of the University Master's in Public Health (UPF/UAB) and the Diploma in Public Health (UPF-BSM), and coordinator of the UPF Master's in Safety and Health at Work: Occupational Risk Prevention (UPC/ UB/UPF). He teaches in the degrees of Medicine, Human Biology, Labour Relations at the UPF.

He has taught in the Doctorate and Master's programs of the University of Porto (Portugal), Texas University School of Public Health (Texas, USA), National University of Costa Rica, University of the Republic of Uruguay in Montevideo, National University de Avellaneda in Argentina, Universidad Católica in Santiago de Chile, SEK Universidad in Quito, Universidad de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Universidad de Huelva and the University of Alicante.

He was President of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) between 2010 and 2014, and director of the Journal Archivos de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales, from its foundation in 1998 until 2005.

He has published a total of 270 scientific articles in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), according to SCOPUS he has an H=40 index, and he has directed as principal researcher more than 31 projects funded through competitive calls and has directed a total of 25 doctoral theses.
