Fernando García Benavides holds a degree in Medicine from the University of Seville and a PhD from the University of Alicante (with highest honors). From 2007 to 2025, he was a professor in the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) ​​at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) Occupational Health Research Center. He is currently Professor Emeritus and, since 2025, has been a Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Chile.

His research aims to contribute to improving the health of working people through etiological and occupational health assessment studies and the production of reports that help identify priorities in occupational health policies. From its founding in 2009 until 2024, he directed the Occupational Health Research Center (CiSAL) at Pompeu Fabra University, where he continues as a senior researcher.

In 2022, Stanford University included him in the World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking in the field of public health.

From 2015 to 2025, he served as director of the Master's Degree in Public Health (UPF/UAB) and the Diploma in Public Health (UPF-BSM), and as UPF coordinator for the Master's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health: Prevention of Workplace Risks (UPC/UB/UPF). He teaches in the Medicine, Human Biology, and Labor Relations degree programs at UPF.

In 2020, he was appointed Scientific Director of the Ibero-American Observatory of Occupational Safety and Health by the Ibero-American Social Security Organization (OISS).

He has taught in the Doctoral and Master's programs at the University of Porto (Portugal), Texas University School of Public Health, University of California at Davis, National University of Costa Rica, University of the Republic of Uruguay in Montevideo, National University of Avellaneda in Argentina, Catholic University in Santiago, Chile, SEK University in Quito, University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, National University of Colombia in Bogotá, Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), University of Huelva, and University of Alicante.

He served as president of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) from 2010 to 2014 and as editor of the journal Archivos de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales (Archives of Occupational Risk Prevention) from its founding in 1998 until 2005.
