Affective polarisation is becoming an increasingly important political and social phenomenon across the globe. While it is traditionally understood as a set
of positive in-party biases and negative out-party biases, its affective component requires special attention. In this seminar, we will consider how several different emotions play into these partisan biases using comparative survey data from five countries (Argentina, Chile, Italy, Portugal and Spain). This research takes into account important psychological mechanisms to explain affective polarisation through the lens of shared emotion processes, allowing us to understand some of the underlying characteristics of polarised groups, as well as their most-likely course of action, derived from each emotion's associated action tendency.
