About the seminar:

Multiculturalism is a defining characteristic of today's societies. In recent years, Europe, in particular, has been the destination of many unprecedented migration flows. Living in multicultural societies implies that both adolescents with migrant backgrounds and their peers belonging to the majority group face the difficulties posed by cultural diversity. Nowadays, intergroup contact thus becomes an additional challenge for adolescents. Having intergroup contact in adolescence is crucial because it is during this period of life that attitudes are formed. Adolescence is, in fact, the period of life when people redefine their identity, including their ethnic identity. Building on these theoretical assumptions, the seminar will explore which factors of different adolescents' life contexts (e.g. family, school, leisure time, cultural contexts) influence intergroup relations. Specifically, the seminar will focus on the longitudinal interplay between bicultural identity development of adolescents with migrant background and intergroup contact. The data that will be presented are from the ongoing ERC- Consolidator project IDENTITIES (G.A. 101002163).
