Microwave imaging is one of the most promising emerging imaging methods because is low-cost, portable and safe. One of the most attractive features of microwave technology for clinical applications is its relatively low entrance barriers with comparison to other medical imaging modalities. The proposed project involves different stages of the technology pipeline, including knowledge/technology protection, pre-prototype design, initial manufacturing and testing. The proposed device will be a small endoscope head composed by several radio frequency (RF) sensors that will allow to form cross-sectional both anatomical and functional images of the interior of the gastro-intestinal tract as the endoscope travels along it. The project counts with the proper environment with the active participation of Hospital Clinic de Barcelona (a leading institution in Europe in terms of biomedical research), and industry (Alma Medical Imaging). Another important factor is the interest of the medical community in new developments aimed to improve the early diagnosis. In the case of endoscopy, and colonoscopy in particular, the main drawback is the limited real-time information during the procedure which demands for well-trained operators and limits its accuracy. The device proposed in this project has the potential to detect hidden tumors and flat polyps due to the capacity of microwaves to penetrate light opaque tissues. The ultimate goal of the project is to improve colorectal patient outcomes by optimizing intra-operative navigation. The orientation of this project is very linked to one of the main lines of our research group. We work closely with industrial and clinical partners, offering a framework to propose and develop biomedical applications and new demonstrative prototypes that will be applied in clinical routine, also in the framework in high competitive research projects.
