Discovering unrecorded music: Challenges and potential approaches to the study of music from the Arabian Gulf
Abstract:
In this talk Caros Guedes will present the work by the Music and Sound Cultures Research Group in recording and digitally encoding music from the Arabian Gulf. This music is interestingly rich in influences that span from East Africa to South India, yet it is not well known outside this region. He will describe the challenges posed to researchers interested in researching this music, and discuss the transdisciplinary methodologies they are developing in order to make this music discoverable and analyzable in the digital domain.
Bio:
Carlos Guedes is a versatile composer whose work spans commissioned projects for dance, theater, film, and concert music. With over 100 public premieres worldwide, his compositions have been showcased at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide.
Carlos Guedes is a Full Professor of Music and Music Technology at NYU Abu Dhabi, where he co-founded the Music and Sound Cultures (MaSC) research group, a group whose mission is to understand music and sound cultures from the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding regions by combining digital archiving with computational, humanistic, and artistic modes of inquiry. This group recently developed two exhibitions in collaboration with Qasr Al Hosn focusing on Emirati traditional crafts. Music of Crafts was premiered at Qasr Al Hosn festival 2023 and Formation of Soof, Abu Dhabi’s pavilion at London Design Biennale ‘23 won the Biennale’s Theme medal.
