About

We are the Music Technology Group

passionate about sound and music

The Music Technology Group (MTG) of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, part of its Department of Engineering, is a leading research group in the field of sound and music computing. We carry out pioneering work on the analysis, understanding, generation of sound and music, combining scientific rigor with artistic and societal relevance.

Our research spans a wide range of areas—such as signal processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, music perception, computational musicology, and human-computer interaction. We address challenges across multiple domains, including music creation, performance, education, and cultural heritage, often in collaboration with musicians, educators, and industry partners.

A core focus of the MTG is the development of trustworthy and transparent AI technologies for music. We believe in open science and actively share datasets, software, and research outcomes with the broader community. Initiatives like Freesound, Essentia, and our public demonstrators exemplify our commitment to accessibility and responsible innovation.

Founded in 1994, the MTG has grown into a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and artists dedicated to shaping the future of music technology while respecting the diversity of musical cultures and practices.

To learn about our current research, projects, or developed software and datasets, go to the Research section. If you are interested in knowing about technologies being licensed, or initiatives to promote industrial collaborations, visit the Industry section. For information about our education programs including pre and postgraduate education, visit the Education section. For outreach activities including creative and music-related initiatives, community resources, or dissemination, visit the Outreach section. You can also contact us for any other information about the MTG.

A good overview can be obtained from the event we organized to celebrate our 25th anniversary, the BCN Music Technology Forum, which included talks, posters, demos, and live music, from past and current members of the MTG.
