The ESPORA artist-in-residency program, led by Phonos, aims to establish connections with Art, Music, and Technology Education institutions throughout Europe by inviting artists in their late formative processes (master, PhD, post-doc...) to develop and present parts of their artwork at Phonos offering as well opportunities for internationalization, learning, and networking.

The ESPORA program in 2022 will host four artists associated with two leading educational institutions (Linz Kunstuniversität and University of Huddersfield), with strong connections with our areas of interest as musical instrument design, electronic music performance, algorithmic composition, and immersive audio.

Echo Ho and Jens Vetter from the Tangible Music Lab at the Arts University in Linz, will participate in ESPORA residence program between 1 and 8 April 2022 to develop their artistic work in the interactive music studio and 3D audio hall. During their residency, they will offer a research seminar on Thursday 7 and a presentation in a public event on Friday 8.

Echo Ho is a Beijing born Cologne-based sonic artist and performer. Her artistic practice goes beyond sound, music and performance by consistently bringing together different media forms, materials and genres at the intersections of art, philosophy, culture and technology. Ho’s works have been performed or presented at the He Xiangning Art Museum Shenzhen, Center-A Vancouver, ISEA 2010 Germany, ZKM Karlsruhe, among others. She was a fellow at the Interdisziplinäre Graduiertenschule für Künste und Wissenschaften der Universität der Künste Berlin, taught at the Akademie der Medienkünste in Cologne and is currently a doctoral candidate at the Tangible Music Lab in Linz, Austria.

During her artistic residency at Phonos, Echo will kick-off the making of the fiction, bringing her harvest of a few rotted plants from the garden and an interactive machine learning tool to build and experiment.

Jens Vetter is a musician, interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Vienna who’s work revolves around sound in a conceptual, mechanical and post-digital way. He is currently investigating the interactive physical representation of sound as PhD candidate at the Tangible Music Lab, University of Art and Design Linz.

During his residency at Phonos, Jens will work on a synthesis engine for his tangible interfaces and continue developing his accessible web-based music software WELLE.

The research seminar will be held in room 55.309 (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) on Thursday, April 7 at 15.30h.
