20 years of Freesound: sound installation and Freesound Day

10.10.2025

The collaborative digital platform Freesound, created in 2005 by the Music Technology Research Group at Pompeu Fabra University, celebrates two decades as the world’s largest repository of Creative Commons licensed sounds. With more than 700,000 shared recordings, Freesound has established itself as a key tool for musicians, artists, researchers, and creators around the globe.

To commemorate this anniversary, a series of activities have taken place throughout 2025, culminating this October with the sound installation “Sounds to be Protected. Twenty Years of Freesound”, curated by the Freesound team in collaboration with Fito Conesa, which will be open to visitors from October 23 to 26 at the CCCB; and with the “Freesound Day”, a public event that will be held at the Sala Aranyó of Campus del Poblenou of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, on October 28, featuring participation from members of the Freesound community and a listening session of the selected works from the composition contest also organized to mark Freesound’s 20th anniversary.
