Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (Germany) are proud to offer this Double Degree. The Department of Political and Social Sciences at UPF and the Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science (GSI) at LMU Munich have teamed up to offer a double programme by taking the Master in Governance at UPF (60 ECTS) and the Master Degree in Politikwissenschaft of LMU Munich (120 ECTS).

The study program at each institution will comprise one year. In the first year all students participating in the double degree program will follow the program at UPF and the second year of the program will take place at LMU Munich. The double degree is fully taught in English. Students successfully participating in the program and fulfilling all academic and administrative requirements will be awarded the following degrees:

LMU Munich: Master of Arts in Politikwissenschaft

UPF: Máster Universitario en Gobernanza / Màster Universitari en Governança / Master in Governance

(The UPF degree will be awarded after the successful completion of the LMU Munich Master program)

 

Study plan

Students must enroll for 60 ECTS credits to choose among the courses offered.

Compulsory courses:

  • Theory and Research Fundamentals in Social Sciences
  • Federalism, self-determination and multilevel governance: comparative political theory
  • Advanced Techniques of Statistical Analysis I
  • The Consequences of the European Integration on EU Citizens
  • Advanced Qualitative Research Methods
  • Advanced Techniques of Statistical Analysis II
  • Inequality and diversity: theoretical and institutional aspects
  • Advanced Political Theory of the 21st Century
  • Master Thesis 

 

Optional courses (choose four):

  • Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Migration Policies
  • Comparative Policy and Governance of Migrations
  • Comparative Political Economy: Regimes, Conflict and Development
  • Politics and Gender
  • Intersectionality and discrimination in politics and society 
  • Current Research on Diverse Democracies
  • Nationalisms and Liberal Democracy
  • Advanced Analysis of Electoral Systems

 

On completion of these courses, students pass to year 2 of the MA Politikwissenschaft. All students of the double degree will write their master thesis according to the LMU program, but tutors of UPF faculty may also be chosen as tutors of the thesis.

Important notice: for studying the Double Degree, students have to apply at both LMU and UPF, and they have to be admitted to both.

Admission Requirements at LMU

International students have to apply at the Geschwister Scholl Institute and at the International Office. A certificate of German knowledge is NOT necessary. Only students with a B.A. in Political Science (or equivalent) will be admitted.

Please note that candidates must meet all three requirements below:

  • Applicants must have obtained a grade point average of 2.0 or better in their first degree. International applicants are required to convert their grade using the Bavarian formula.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 90 ECTS credits in political science courses in their first degree, in particular in the areas of political theory, political systems, and international relations.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 9 ECTS credits in empirical political science research methods (quantitative).

Tuition fees

Students participating in the double degree program pay the regular tuition fees at UPF for the Master in Current Democracies (see tuition fees).

At LMU Munich, all students are required to pay a mandatory fee for student services (Grundbeitrag) and for basic off-peak public transport ("Semesterticket") Fee amount.

This fee is charged at the beginning of each semester by LMU Munich on behalf of the Munich Student Services ("Studentenwerk").
