Book: A written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers [Oxford English Dictionary]

  • Books: those familiar and, in our high-tech world, seemingly nostalgia-inducing objects.
  • Books: resources that have been a medium for recording and passing on human knowledge, thought and creativity for many centuries.
  • Books: artefacts without which we could not understand the cultural, technical, technological and social advances that have brought us to where we are today.
  • Books: tools that are perfect in their completeness, beauty and excellence.

Organized to mark Pompeu Fabra University's 25th anniversary, this exhibition of bibliographical resources features 26 works (one per academic year) from the UPF Library's reserve section. Most of them are printed books, although there is also a place for parchment manuscripts, for other kinds of medium, and for books from distant cultures.

Since UPF was founded in 1990, its Library has acquired 600,000 monographs and over 13,000 collections of serials in various physical formats, such as paper and media readable by electronic devices. While the University has purchased many of the documents in question, others, significant in both their quantity and quality, have been given to it as gifts and donations.

Exclòs de préstec” (Not for loan) exhibition is a showcase for documents that can be deemed important on the basis of their bibliographical value or rare or curious nature. Additionally, however, it seeks to pay tribute to and thank all the people who and organizations which have entrusted anything from a single book to entire collections comprising thousands of volumes to UPF. It also aims to recognize everyone at UPF who, via the Library or otherwise, makes or has made it possible to process and preserve the University's collection of bibliographical resources, to raise awareness of it and, in particular, to place it at users' disposal.

The documents on show in the exhibition, many of which are being displayed for the first time, are representative of the diversity, in terms of periods, of subject matter and disciplines, of languages and cultures, and of materials and media, by which the Library's collection is characterized.

The exhibition is organized into ten sections with one particular aspect in common. In addition to an explanation of its origins and what makes it unique, each work is accompanied by a bibliographic description.

The exhibition will run from 14 April to 20 May 2016 on UPF's Ciutadella campus.
