The EuroMedMig Consortium has won the competitive bid to host the prestigious IMISCOE PhD School 2027 at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona. The proposal was accepted by the IMISCOE Board of Directors (Network of Excellence in Migration and Diversity Research Centres) following a rigorous competitive process.

This proposal has special significance for us. EuroMedMig was born within IMISCOE and has now become a research association. This PhD school provides an opportunity to reconnect with our origins through the much stronger structure of the new EuroMedMig Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network.

The PhD course, set to take place in one of the Mediterranean's most emblematic cities, will focus on the theme: "Regional Migration Studies: Dynamics of Human Mobility, Governance and Socioeconomic Transformations".

A Convergence of Networks and Opportunities: This initiative represents a high-value convergence, as the event will bring together the EuroMedMig Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network and the IMISCOE PhD Network. This joint effort is set to strengthen intellectual exchange and reinforce IMISCOE's role as the leading international hub for doctoral training in migration studies.

Key Descriptors of the Winning Proposal: The PhD School is designed to offer a multi-scalar and comparative perspective that moves beyond usual national or global focuses.

  • Regional and Multi-scalar Focus:The goal is to conceptualize and compare regions as political, historical, and institutional spaces where mobility is shaped and regulated. This approach allows for linking interconnected migration systems across continents like Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific.
  • Inclusion and Diversity: The School is expected to host around 25 PhD students and  trainers from diverse world regions. There is a strong commitment to inclusion, offering registration waivers, travel scholarships, and accommodation support, with priority given to candidates from the Global South and under-resourced institutions.
  • The intensive five-day programme will be structured around four key areas of research:
    • Regional governance, policies, and politics.
    • Social and cultural transformations.
    • Migration patterns, drivers, and representations.
    • Economy, labour markets, and development.
