Ricardo Martínez Esquivel is a professor and researcher of History of Culture and Chinese Studies, at the Universidad de Costa Rica. He is also the director of REHMLAC+ [Journal of Historical Studies of Freemasonry [ISSN: 1659-4223, Website: http://rehmlac.ucr.ac.cr/]. He holds the same position in Red Académica Latino (e Hispano) Americanista sobre Estudios Sinológicos based at the Universidad de Costa Rica. This network aims at building links between different Spanish-speaking scholars interested in the China and its sphere of influence. Our network comprises Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco, the Universidad Estatal a Distancia at Costa Rica, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Université Bordeaux-Montaigne, the Sun Yat-sen University, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and we are working on the Global Encounters project between China and Europe, funded by the European Research Council framework program Horizon 2020 of the European Commission, and the Mexican publishing house Palabra de Clío.

Martinez Esquivel received his BA in History and his MA in Central America History from Universidad de Costa Rica; his MA in Asian and African Studies, specializing in China at El Colegio de México; and his PhD. in History from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He has published multiple indexed journal articles and chapters on the historiography of the history of Freemasonry and the Theosophical Society, the history of the China Mission, Chinese immigration in Latin America, the contact between China and the West, Global History, the Pacific World and the history of the huidaomen 會道門. His recent publications include Masones y masonería en la Costa Rica de los albores de la Modernidad (1865-1899) (Editorial de la Universidad de Costa Rica, 2017), of which he is sole author. He also edited Los chinos de ultramar: Diásporas, sociabilidad e identidades (Palabra de Clío, 2018), and co-wrote as well as co-edited the five volumes 300 años: masonerías y masones, 1717-2017 (Palabra de Clío, 2017-2018). 

Ricardo Martínez Esquivel is member of the Centro di Ricerche Storiche sulla Libera-Muratoria, of the Red Académica de América Latina y el Caribe sobre China of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, of the Centro de Estudios Históricos de la Masonería Española of the Universidad de Zaragoza, of the Asociación para el Fomento de los Estudios Históricos en Centroamérica and of the Grupo La Habana, an Academic network dedicated to studies on Freemasonry in Latin America.
