Ferran Vilalta is a PhD student at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), working under the supervision of Prof. Joan-Pau Rubiés. His project, supported by a FPU grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, focuses on Martín Ignacio de Loyola (c. 1551-1606), a Franciscan discalced friar who was the first man to complete two circumnavigations of the Earth, acting as a missionary in China and Paraguay before becoming bishop of the Río de la Plata. His research interests include early modern religious encounters between Europe and China and the global reach of the Spanish empire.
