The Centre for Studies on Planetary Wellbeing promotes interdisciplinary internships in collaboration with different university departments
The Centre for Studies in Planetary Wellbeing (CEBP) continues to strengthen its commitment to practical training in Planetary Wellbeing through interdisciplinary internships developed in collaboration with various university departments.
During the 2025–2026 academic year, four students completed internships related to Planetary Wellbeing, working with the Departments of Medicine and Life Sciences, Political and Social Sciences, the Communication Department at the Barcelona School of Management (BSM-UPF), and the Centre for Studies in Planetary Wellbeing itself.
The experiences of Kléopatra Psilogiannopoulos-Tagalos, María Teresa Ferrada, Sol de Caso, and Marya Janet Bautista reflect the diversity of academic and professional profiles that converge in the field of Planetary Wellbeing, as well as the value of integrating this approach across teaching, research, communication, and cultural creation.
Kléopatra Psilogiannopoulos-Tagalos: integrating planetary health into public health education
Kléopatra Psilogiannopoulos-Tagalos is a student of the Interuniversity Master’s in Planetary Health (UOC–ISGlobal–UPF) and completed her internship in the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences under the academic supervision of Mireia Llimós (Academic Coordinator of the Master’s in Public Health at UPF). With a background in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and a Minor in Sustainable Agriculture and Consumption, her profile combines public health with agri-food sustainability.
During her internship, Kléopatra collaborated on a project aimed at incorporating planetary health into public health master’s programs at various Spanish universities (UPF, UPV, and USC) and internationally (University of Chile). Her main tasks included analyzing and reviewing course plans, creating comparative frameworks and curriculum improvement proposals, coordinating project phases, and drafting guides and technical materials using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
This experience allowed her to develop skills in academic project management and coordination, critical analysis of educational programs, and teamwork in multidisciplinary settings. She also participated in academic and international exchange spaces, such as the Barcelona Workshop on Postgraduate Education in Planetary Health, reinforcing her interest in integrating planetary health transversally into the training of future public health professionals.
María Teresa Ferrada: strengthening scientific communication in Planetary Wellbeing
María Teresa Ferrada is a trained nurse and a student of the Master’s in Scientific, Medical, and Environmental Communication at the Barcelona School of Management (BSM-UPF). She completed her internship at the Centre for Studies in Planetary Wellbeing, bringing her previous experience in occupational health and her interest in scientific dissemination.
During her stay, María Teresa collaborated in the design and development of a communication plan for the CEBP, aimed at strengthening the centre’s communication strategy and increasing its visibility both internally and externally. Her tasks included defining strategic communication lines, creating outreach content, and proposing actions to bring Planetary Wellbeing closer to different audiences.
These practices allowed her to deepen her understanding of the importance of communicating science clearly, rigorously, and accessibly, especially in the context of a climate and environmental crisis with direct impacts on human health. She also valued gaining a thorough understanding of the organization’s identity, objectives, and history as a basis for building solid and meaningful communication strategies.
Sol de Caso: sustainability in cultural creation processes
Sol de Caso, a Chilean actress and student of the Master’s in Creative Documentary (BSM-UPF), completed her internship during the filming of the movie Syntony, directed by Eva Vila (co-director of the Master’s in Creative Documentary), from October 2024 to May 2025. Her role in the project was transversal, taking on different responsibilities depending on the needs of the shoot, including assistant director, production assistant, acting coach, and general coordination support, as well as contributing to the narrative development of the work.
A key aspect of her experience was participating in the implementation of the shoot’s Sustainability Plan, working with specific guidelines to make responsible decisions regarding material use, resource management, and team travel. This experience allowed her to incorporate sustainability criteria into the audiovisual field and reflect on the environmental impact of cultural creation processes.
Through this internship, she had the opportunity to integrate into an audiovisual team in Catalonia, learn new organizational methods, and expand her professional network in the sector.
Marya Janet Bautista: communication and public policy with a Planetary Wellbeing focus
Marya Janet Bautista is a Mexican journalist and a student of the Master’s in Public and Social Policy at BSM-UPF. She completed her internship at the Public Policy Center (JHU-UPF PPC) of Pompeu Fabra University, joining a team specialized in international research and project management.
During her stay, she participated in the design and development of two communication campaigns for international conferences: Rethinking the eco-social determinants of health inequities from a transdisciplinary and intersectoral perspective (ESDHI-EU 2025) and the Second International Congress on Ecological Humanities 2025. Her tasks included strategic content planning, scheduling publications, drafting informative and persuasive texts, and designing graphic materials for dissemination across different channels.
Additionally, for a period, she collaborated with the Centre for Studies in Planetary Wellbeing, where she gained a deeper understanding of the importance of communication in building shared environmental awareness. This experience allowed her to apply the knowledge gained in her Journalism degree and master’s program, as well as to develop skills such as adaptability, empathy, and teamwork. All of this strengthened her professional interest in working at the intersection of communication, public policy, and social and environmental wellbeing.
These experiences highlight the importance of integrating a planetary wellbeing approach transversally across different areas of the university—teaching, research, communication and cultural creation—and demonstrate how collaboration between departments and multidisciplinary teamwork help to train professionals who are better prepared, more critical, and more committed to addressing today's social and environmental challenges.
