Title: Human-Mosquito Interactions and Public Health in the Context of Climate Change

SpeakerJohn Palmer (Associate professor, Department of Political and Social Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University)

Summary: Recent shifts in the population dynamics and ranges of several mosquito species have led to large increases in the global burden of mosquito borne diseases and in the risk of outbreaks of these diseases in many areas. This process is driven, in part, by climate change making certain parts of the world more environmentally suitable to vector mosquitoes, while at the same time changing human behavior in ways that create more opportunities for the human-mosquito interactions through which pathogens are transmitted. This talk will provide an overview of current research on these topics, with a particular focus on the role of human activities in shaping spatio-temporal patterns of mosquito borne disease transmission.
