Prof. Marco Madella, director of the Centre for Digital Humanities and coordinator of the Culture and Socio-Ecological Dynamics (CASEs) research group, is featured in the newest issue of the UPF magazine, 360upf.

He talks about the importance of archaeology to “reconstruct human history and understand how societies have evolved over time”, as well as its possibilities to “offer insight into ancient societies’ adaptability to changing environmental conditions, which has important implications for food security, especially in the current context of climate change”.

Prof. Madella delves into the importance of cultural heritage preservation and the role that technology can play in it, as well as artificial intelligence, which he believes “can be compatible with sustainability and social commitment when it is developed, implemented and used ethically and responsibly”.

He highlights the role that digital humanities play in addressing planetary wellbeing challenges, specially by “facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, providing platforms and tools to integrate data and research methods from different disciplines”. He notes that “technology and human sciences can work side by side to address environmental and social challenges holistically”.
