The Pompeu Fabra chair will promote Catalan language and culture

The new Pompeu Fabra chair aimed to make the University’s commitment to the Catalan spirit more explicit and also give visibility to activities promoting the language and culture carried out at the institution, both in research and in teaching.

M. Teresa Cabré, UPF emeritus lecturer and president of the Philological Section of the IEC, became its director. In a context of linguistic diversity, the choice of one language or another is based on such criteria as efficiency and functionality. The University, faithful to its own language, follows the principle of subsidiarity, according to which Catalan must be used whenever possible and appropriate.

The Chair, presented on 18 November, was to work in four different areas of action: promoting the knowledge and use of the language in teaching and by students; the production of resources to support learning and improve linguistic quality; boosting the promotion of the use of Catalan, and cultural outreach, which will result in the organization of a Pompeu Fabra Chair conference.
