Minor in Initial Studies in Applied Languages
Description
Knowledge about natural languages has highly diverse applications in today’s world, from technological applications involving automatic processing of linguistic data to foreign language teaching or information management in multilingual environments. The Minor in Initial Studies in Applied Languages provides an insight into the main types of applications of language that are to be found in a variety of professional fields in order to understand their basic characteristics.
Target
Students at UPF centres, students on the UPF Open Bachelor’s Degree programme and UPF graduates enrolled in the UPF Alumni programme. Students taking the bachelor’s degrees offered by the Faculty of Translation and Language Sciences are excluded.
Characteristics
- In order to obtain the qualification, students are required to take a minimum of 20 ECTS credits and a maximum of 30 ECTS credits.
- Students cannot include subjects that form part of their curriculum in the Minor.
- Out of the total of credits that make up the Minor, students are only allowed to have taken a maximum of 10 credits as part of the academic record of their official degree at UPF, either as cross-disciplinary free-elective training or as RAC credits, depending on the activity.
- The timetables of the subjects and the rooms where the classes are taught will be scheduled by the studies in charge of the corresponding training activity. The subjects are taught in the language indicated in the course plan or in the programme of the proposed activity.
Activities
To obtain the Minor it is necessary to take at least:
- One subject of the student’s choice, between Catalan Language and Spanish Language.
- Two case study subjects.

(1)This Minor includes subjects belonging to the Bachelor’s Programme in Applied Languages verified in 2009 and to the Bachelor’s Programme in Applied Languages that was verified in 2018 (taught as of the 2019-2020 academic year). Students can choose subjects from one list or the other depending on the subjects offered at the time they take them.
Number of credits

Introductory course
2019-2020 academic year. The subjects offered will be updated yearly.
This Minor renders ineffective, as of the 2019-2020 academic year, the Minor in Initial Studies in Applied Languages passed for students on the Open Bachelor’s Degree programme, without prejudice to those students who have already started it being able to finish.
