According to Decree Law22/2021, of 5 October, it is no longer compulsory for students who started their undergraduate studies in the 2018-2019 and subsequent academic years to accredit level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for English, German, French or Italian as a requirement for graduation, although it does mention the need for undergraduate students to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills in at least one foreign language.

UPF considers training in foreign languages fundamental for our undergraduate students. Therefore, it not only seeks to encourage such training, but also to acknowledge the effort of students who in recent years have received training in language skills and knowledge and have accredited at least level B2 in one of these languages, following the guidelines relating to the accreditation requirement of the previous Law 1/2018. Thus, UPF will issue a UPF Passport accrediting language proficiency and training, as a supplement to the undergraduate degree, to all undergraduate students who graduate in the 2021-2022 or subsequent academic years who meet the requirements. To obtain it, via a new automated system, students can request self-service accreditation of language proficiency via the Degree Academic Secretariat. This document will include the accreditations and training courses passed. Once the studies Secretariat has validated the language certificates, students may obtain the document accrediting their knowledge of languages.

Furthermore, UPF will continue to ensure that undergraduate students can acquire knowledge of a third language. In this sense, it will work to incorporate into the curricula the measures that favour its graduates’ training in foreign languages and will promote language training for all students. It will also continue to implement the measures agreed upon by the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia as of the date of publication of the Decree Law in relation to the accreditation of the acquisition of language skills by graduates and the means used to demonstrate the level of knowledge and skills acquired. Finally, through Languages UPF, UPF will continue to offer accredited exams and subsidized foreign language courses. You can check what is on offer here.
