Infolex Group

Grup de recerca en informació lexicogràfica

The InfoLex group was created in 1994 with the foundation of the University Institute for Applied Linguistics (IULA). It was recognised as a research group within UPF in 2004 and has been recognised as a consolidated group by the Catalan Government between 2005 and 2021 (2005 SGR 00245, 2009 SGR 1138, 2014 SGR 1071, 2017 SGR 1366), with M. Paz Battaner (2004-2008), Janet DeCesaris (2009-2011) and Sergi Torner (as of 2012) as PIs. In 2022 it was recognised as part of the consolidated group TraDiLex (2021 SGR 952), while remaining a research group recognised within UPF.

The name of the group tells about the two axes that compose it: Info from information and informatization together with lex from lexis and lexicography. The interest of our group is the study of lexis as the object of dictionaries, both monolingual and bilingual, and of lexical information representation in dictionaries. Some of the research lines explored by InfoLex members include monolingual dictionary making for learners, semantics, lexical combinatorics, and neology. Two further lines have been added to the group's projects recently, namely research on translation adopting corpus-based methodologies and research on accessibility. InfoLex is part of the Institute for Applied Linguistics (IULA), a specific research centre at UPF.

Títol del seminari: Collocation and collaboration: Developing the ColloCaid writing assistant

Ponent: Geraint Rees is Research Fellow in Corpus-based Lexicography and Academic Writing at the University of Surrey, and Associate Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. His research interests include Corpus Linguistics, Lexicography, Vocabulary Acquisition, and Learning Technologies. His current focus is on the integration of lexicographic resources with other technologies.

Resum: In this talk, I present ColloCaid, a collaborative project drawing on expertise from the fields of Language Teaching, Lexicography, and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research. ColloCaid is a digital writing assistant developed to help writers of academic English with collocations. I begin by outlining the rationale underlying its development; stressing the need for a resource that not only makes users aware of gaps in their lexical knowledge, but also allows them to address these gaps without interrupting the writing process. I then present the methodology used to develop and evaluate ColloCaid. The development phase includes the creation of a lexical database containing circa 30,000 academic collocations and genuine examples of collocation use adapted from corpora of academic texts. The evaluation phase involves the application of methods from HCI to assess the usability of the tool. I give practical examples of two key lessons learnt during the development process. Firstly, that concepts from HCI research have exciting potential applications in lexicography, and secondly, that, while undoubtably valuable for lexicographers, methods from Corpus Linguistics and Natural Language Processing must not be adopted uncritically. I conclude the talk by presenting several publicly available datasets resulting from the project and highlighting their potential applications in future research.
