Today, 8 June, the results of the 2018 Edition of the QS World University Rankings have been published, which contains the 959 best universities in the world. UPF remains in same the bracket as for the past few years, between 280 and 300, specifically in 296th place overall, and 133rd in Europe. Taking into account that in the world there are 26,000 universities, UPF is ranked within the top 1.1%.

Like last year, UPF leads Spain in two of the indicators used: number of citations received by researchers’ articles (ranked 257, climbing 21 positions) and for the percentage of international teaching staff (ranked 210, an indicator that UPF has led since 2012).

According to QS, the citations indicator is used to “assess universities’ research impact and quality”, whereas for international teaching staff, this indicator measures universities’ “ability to attract students and academics from other nations”.

Four U.S. universities occupy the top positions: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Harvard University, and the California Institute of Technology. The first European University is the University of Cambridge, coming in fifth place.

Ranking indicators

The QS ranking is based on six indicators, with different weighting: academic reputation (40%) is obtained from a survey addressing academics, who evaluate the best universities in their field; the number of citations (20%) measures the average number of citations received by an institution’s teachers; the ratio between teachers and students (20%).

The other indicators are the reputation of employers (10%), obtained from a survey, this time addressing companies from all over the world which evaluate the university institutions that best train professionals; the percentage of international teaching staff over total teaching staff (5%), and the percentage of international students over total students (5%).

Out of a maximum of 100 points, UPF has obtained an average of 37.8, distributed as follows: academic reputation (37.8), number of citations (47.7), ratio between teachers and students (30.9), reputation of employers (36.3), percentage of international teaching staff (74.8), and percentage of international students (31.6).
