At the Spanish University Championships held during the months of April and May, Pompeu Fabra University achieved very positive results, with a total of seven medals: two gold, three silver and two bronze.

The swimmer María Cerezo gave a brilliant display in the competition held in Murcia, with one gold medal (in the 100m butterfly) and two silvers (50 and 200m butterfly). The same town hosted the state karate championship in which UPF picked up two more medals: one gold by Naiara Moreno (Kumite -61 kg); and one bronze by Marta De Sande (Kumite -50 kg).

The other podium finishes were obtained in chess, with third place for the team comprised of Pau Juan, Nico García, Max Ventura, Cristina Coll and Imar Telló, and a second place for Marta Trillo in the golf tournament, held in Antequera, enabling her to win a medal for the fourth consecutive year.

Other outstanding performances at the state university competition were the women’s indoor football team, which earned a commendable fifth place after losing two matches and winning against the University of Cadiz; that of Guillem Valls, who competed in athletics in Cartagena (4th in the 400 meters), and that of Ernest López, who came 10th in the triathlon held in San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia).

Good results in the Catalan competition

With regard to the Catalan University Championships, coordinated by the Esport Català Universitari (ECU), UPF has so far won 27 medals (eleven gold, eight silver and eight bronze). It should be borne in mind that some competitions have not yet been held, such as the open water championship (18 June) and the triathlon (16 July).

Three of these medals are for team events (gold in women’s indoor football, silver in football-7s and bronze in men’s rugby-7s), and 22 for individual events, notably UPF’s success in the team classification for chess and swimming.

The two medals at the second edition of the University Student Electronic Sports championships in Catalonia deserve a special mention. A gold in the Overwatch category, by the team comprising Artur Anguera, Bruno Cordero, Álvaro-José Millán, Jordi Pacreu, Cristina Gutiérrez and Carlos Mancebo, and a silver by Isaac Reixach in the Hearthstone category.

Championships aside, other notable sports news of the season are the victory in football-7s of team “Asteroides” in the university league. In this competition, the teams of UPF face off against other universities in the Barcelona area in different disciplines.

The  sports activity of the academic year, coordinated by the sports area of the University Community Assistance Service (SACU), was completed with the usual tournaments (table football on 8 June), the various courses to improve health and well-being, and the Sports Workshop sessions. The last session of this series took place on 6 June, organized by UPF Alumnus Carla Casals, communicologist and coach, entitled “When dreaming is the best prize”.
