Ethical Time: the first sustainable fashion app

A student at Pompeu Fabra University has designed the first app for buying clothes sustainably in the State. Ethical Time, conceived to provide easy access to sustainable clothing brands, has started up a company a through crowdfunding. An increasing number of people every day are joining the “ethical fashion” movement and are demanding “non-slave work” as a minimum requirement to make their purchases.

Ethical Time app - UPF

Ethical Time, a not-for-profit association founded  by Ignasi Eiriz, a student at UPF in Barcelona, has started up this December a crowdfunding campaign to launch the first sustainable clothing app in Spain. The innovative project will bring sustainable fashion brands to their potential consumers.

The association proposes the creation of a free virtual space that will serve as a meeting point between consumers and brands of clothing and footwear that follow sustainable principles. The application and the website will include all the stores in Spain with brands that are responsible towards people and the environment, and wish to generate a positive social impact. In addition, the project will concentrate all the online sales pages in the territory since, as its creator says, “most of the companies in the sector are only present online”.

“Our goal is to define a space that facilitates purchases with ethical values”, says Eiriz, founder of the association and a second-year student on the bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations at UPF. “Many people are aware, but, due to the lack of resources, few can act accordingly”. For this reason, the application will be presented as a free service for both the users that download it and for the brands and stores that wish to be party to the initiative.

Ethical Time is made up of UPF professors, such as the sociologist Albert Sales, and also students, and has the support of the president of the association Justícia i Pau  (Justice and Peace) of Barcelona, Arcadi Oliveres. Among the goals of the project is the creation of the first Sustainable Fashion Consumer Network, a place where users can also benefit from discounts and special offers by the brands present. “All the features will be directed at facilitating the purchase and offering information about fashion ethics, and to approach brand-customer relations”, says the founder.

This December has seen the promotion of the crowdfunding campaign to finance the creation of the mobile application and the web page. Yesterday on the Verkami platform a page was set up where you can make your donations to raise a total of €20,000, the investment required to carry out the project. The initiative is due to be presented officially in the month of April, in commemoration of the collapse of a textiles building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where in 2013 more than a thousand workers of the textile sector were killed.
