UPF among the top 500 universities in the world

According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2009 realized by The Centre for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China). Moreover,  it is among the top 100 world-wide, the field of computing.

campusUPF is, for the first time, among the top 500 universities in the world and, moreover,  the field of computing it is among the top 100 world-wide, and number one in the Spanish State, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2009. Concretely, UPF is in the 402-501 bracket of world ranking of the top universities.

The Centre for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) have published the (ARWU) 2009 ranking, a report published yearly since 2003 which reviews the scientific and academic production of over 1,000 universities -the previous edition featured 2,000 centres- and which publishes, on the web, the results of the top 500 university centres throughout the world, in accordance with bibliometric indices as to academic and research activities.

The world ranking is led by Harvard, Stanford and California-Berkeley (USA) and Cambridge (United Kingdom), which is again the most highly valued European university. In Europe, Cambridge and Oxford universities together with the University College of London lead the ranking for 2009.

With regard to the classification of Spanish universities at world level, in first place we find the University of Barcelona (in the 101-200 bracket); the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Valencia (in the 201-302 bracket); the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (in the 303-401 bracket); and in the same bracket as UPF are the universities of Granada, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Saragossa (in the 402-501 bracket).

UPF, among the top 100 in computing

Precisely when it is almost 20 years since Pompeu Fabra University was established and we are celebrating 10 years of the Polytechnic School (ESUP), UPF is among the 100 best universities in the world in the field of  computing, the only Spanish university in the 76-100 bracket for this discipline.

The methodology used by the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2009 includes analysis of bibliometric data on the number of relevant prizes (Nobel, Field medals) obtained by the students and teaching staff of the universities; the most cited researchers in the 21 research areas established by the Thomson ISI (Institute for Scientific Information); articles published in Nature and Science for the 2004-2008 period and articles listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) during 2008, and, finally, academic efficacy in accordance with the size of the institution.
