Within the framework of its general objectives, the Pompeu Fabra Chair (càtedra Pompeu Fabra or CPF) proposes to take action in four areas:

  1. Area of promotion of knowledge and use of the language in teaching and by students, in order to bring about a short- and mid-term training plan enabling: 
  • UPF students who were schooled in Catalan to improve their competencies and skills in the terrain of oral and written production and especially in the production of the specific discourse of the profession or professions they are likely to practise. This objective is associated with one of the objectives of the CPF: for future professionals graduating from UPF to possess a discursive quality in Catalan that makes them stand out, also in this terrain, as top-level professionals who will practise both locally and globally.

  • Students from outside Catalonia to be capable, within a very short timeframe, of understanding classes taught in Catalan, and in the midterm, of expressing themselves comfortably in academic situations. At the same time they must have sufficient information to know the cultural and linguistic context in which they move, in order to be able to situate knowledge and practice of the language in the right framework.

 

  1. Area of production of learning support resources and improvement of linguistic quality, with the aim of improving, if possible, the model of expression in formal academic communications and interaction among students and between students and teaching staff. To this end the Chair seeks:
  • To develop, on the basis of the existing Language Office website, a Catalan language and culture resource portal and give it visibility.

  • To gather information on resources developed in UPF research groups and incorporate them directly or remotely into the portal.

  • To produce a white paper on research at UPF related to Catalan language and culture or directly useful for getting to know Catalan culture and promoting the use of the language in academic circles.

 

  1. Area of participatory revitalisation in promoting the use of Catalan. The CPF proposes to:
  • Design a revitalisation plan in collaboration with students and lecturers from various studies who wish to be involved.

  • Create a collaborative platform to undertake this revitalisation plan.

  • Design a collaboration plan with the students with a view to formulating a proposal for ideas to put into practice by the students for the promotion of knowledge, quality and use of Catalan at the University.

 

  1. Area of cultural outreach. The CPF proposes to organise a seminar (“Pompeu Fabra Chair Seminars”), to take place annually, on the figure and the work of Pompeu Fabra and his extensive legacy.
