Getting to know Catalonia: An Introduction to the Catalan Language, Culture and Society is the title of the new UPF MOOC which aims to present Catalan language and culture to all those interested in finding out about the organization, the history and the most relevant features of Catalonia.

It is especially suitable for foreign students joining the Catalan university.

This massive online open course lasts three weeks (2-23 April 2018) and is taught entirely in English on the FutureLearn platform. Registrations for the MOOC are already open.

Teresa Cabré, UPF emeritus full professor and director of the Pompeu Fabra chair, is coordinating the MOOC, which is led by the renowned writer and translator Màrius Serra.

Getting to know Catalonia” is one of a great many activities of the 2018 Year of Pompeu Fabra, promoted by the Catalan Government commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Fabra and the centenary of the Catalan Grammar.

Three modules taught by a multidisciplinary team of UPF lecturers

The course consists of three modules, each structured around various units of similar content. The first deals with the economy and the main driving forces of knowledge, and is made up of the units on economics and the welfare state.

The second module looks at history, politics and the media and its respective units will highlight Catalonia’s millenary origins and space for communication.

The third module tackles language, literature, art and culture: the first unit of this module talks about history, the evolution and features of the Catalan language; the second looks at the most relevant literary movements, and works of the country’s main artistic and cultural expressions.

To deal with such a broad diversity of subjects, the MOOC has a team of UPF lecturers from different departments: Oriol Amat and Guillem López Casasnovas (Economics and Business), Teresa Cabré and Enric Gallén (Translation and Language Sciences), Josep Gifreu (Communication), Eva March (Humanities), and Tomàs de Montagut (Law).

This course adds to the University’s catalogue of MOOCs, which has already surpassed the figure of 200,000 registrations.
