Biography

I am currently a post-doctoral research at the Research and Expertise Centre for Survey Methodology (RECSM).  I obtained my MA degree in psychology from University of Warsaw and completed my PhD in social psychology at the University of the Basque Country in 2013. I have been a post-doctoral research and assistant lecturer at the University of the Basque Country from 2013 to 2019. I have actively participated in diverse international research networks, such COST Action (IS1205). I have been a visiting researcher at several international universities such as University of Kent, Utrecht University, New School of Social Research, University of Groningen, Free University of Brussels, University of Buenos Aires, and Valparaiso University. I am a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Intercultural Relations and an associate editor at the International Journal of Social Psychology (Revista de Psicología Social) and Journal of Psychodidactics (Revista de Psicodidáctica).

As a social psychologist, I have dedicated my 11-year research career to studying intergroup processes among majority and minority groups in multicultural societies, as well as victims and perpetrators in post-conflict societies. My work is dedicated to two main lines of research. On the one hand, I have been studying minorities, their wellbeing, and majority groups’ responses to minority groups. I examined how immigrants respond to discrimination to protect their wellbeing. Among possible coping responses I studied diverse identity management strategies, such as individual mobility, social competition, intergroup and intrapersonal comparisons, or attributions to prejudice, but also ingroup identification or host national disidentification. I was also interested in how values contribute to minority and majority groups’ wellbeing. I also examine to what extent different psychological processes such as ingroup identification, perceptions of threat or different systems of beliefs (personal values, ideology, autochthony beliefs) but also emotional cues (such as emotional tears or smile) shape majority responses toward minority groups, e.g. migrants or refugees. On the other hand, I have been involved in cross-cultural research on intergroup conflict. I examined how collective memory (including representation of historical events or narratives of collective victimhood) shape intergroup responses, such as willingness to be involved in future violent conflict or reconciliation outcomes in post-conflict settings. I have also studied the effectiveness of reconciliation-promoting tools such as institutional apologies or peace-promoting activities. In sum, my research aims to enhance more favorable intergroup relations between minority and majority groups, or the victims and the perpetrators.
