Back XR streaming over Wi-Fi

XR streaming over Wi-Fi

02.05.2023

In the near future, Wi-Fi networks will be massively used to consume high-quality XR contents. In MAX-R, the Wireless Networking group (WN@UPF) is studying and optimising Wi-Fi’s ability to deliver such XR contents to end-users.

WN@UPF is currently focusing on the remote XR rendering case: the XR video is rendered in real-time in a remote server placed at the network cloud/edge —following the received actions and movements performed by the client—, and streamed to the client’s Head Mounted Display (HMD). At this stage, WN@UPF aims to understand the interplay between XR traffic characteristics and the Wi-Fi operation to find strategies able to maximise the network capacity without sacrificing the end-users’ quality of experience. The image below shows the XR-Wi-Fi network used for the tests.
