JOVIS celebrates Cèlia Premat Katz's doctoral defense on youth, migration, and coexistence in Barcelonès

Last January, Cèlia Premat Katz, a collaborator of JOVIS, defended her doctoral thesis at Pompeu Fabra University. Titled "Youth, Migration, and Coexistence: Four Case Studies in Barcelonès (2000 – 2024)", the research, co-directed by Dr. Carles Feixa Pàmpols and Dr. Miquel Rodrigo Alsina, analyzes youth migration stories in contexts such as Raval, Santa Coloma, and Besòs, employing Participatory Action Research methodologies.
The thesis stands out for its ability to address conflicts, resistance mechanisms, and stigmas from a human rights perspective and with a combination of global and local approaches. In her conclusions, the author highlights how adultcentrism marginalizes youth agency and how local spaces become arenas of territorial control.
The examination committee was composed of Dr. Pilar Medina Bravo (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) as President, Dr. María Asunción Llena Berñe (Universitat de Barcelona) as Vocal, and Dr. Mercedes Gema Jiménez Álvarez (Universidad de Sevilla) as Secretary. The work was graded with excellence, emphasizing its social relevance, multidisciplinary approach, and direct connection to the reality of the territory. This thesis represents an essential contribution to understanding the social and political challenges of Barcelona.
